A Canadian soldier has been gunned down at a war memorial service, while guarding a monument near the parliament building in the capital city of Ottowa, prompting authorities to lock down the area.
While standing guard at the National War Memorial, a member of the country’s armed forces was shot by a man with a rifle, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said on Wednesday.
According to witnesses, the soldier appeared seriously wounded and emergency medics were seen attempting to revive him.
Witnesses also said the armed attacker ran to Parliament Hill building after the shooting and there have been reports of at least 20 shots being fired inside the building.
The incident prompted police to seal off the parliament building and the office of Prime Minister Stephen Harper, who was escorted from the area.
The shooting comes just two days after a radicalized Quebec man, identified as Martin Couture-Rouleau, was shot dead by police, after he ran down two soldiers, killing one of them, with his vehicle near a military compound.
