Kashmir observes India's independence day with Black Day


SRINAGAR; 15, Aug 2012:  Kashmiris on both sides of the Line of Control and the world over observed the India’s Independence Day, today, as Black Day to convey the message to the international community that India had usurped the Kashmiris’ inalienable right to self-determination.



 The day was marked by complete shutdown in occupied Kashmir, call for which had been given by the APHC Chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, veteran Kashmiri Hurriyat leader, Syed Ali Shah Geelani and other pro-liberation leaders.
 Normal life came to a standstill as the authorities had put in place stringent restrictions in Srinagar and other towns to prevent people from holding anti-India demonstrations.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles were used for the first time for surveillance and cellular services were shut down as part of the security drill to ensure peaceful Official Independence Day celebrations in the Valley. Tight security measures weretaken around Bakhshi Stadium, the main venue of the 15th August celebrations.
CCTV cameras and sniffer dogs had also been pressed into service for surveillance purposes. The APHC-AJK chapter and other pro-liberation groups held a peaceful protest sit-in outside the United Nations Observers’ Office in Islamabad, today, to mark the Indian Independence Day as Black Day. A memorandum was handed over on the occasion,which appealed to the Secretary General of the World Body to fulfill his obligations on Kashmir. In Brussels, a forceful protest demonstration was held outside the Indian Embassy. The Chairman of Kashmir Centre European Union, Barrister Abdul Majeed Tramboo addressing the demonstrators said that the Kashmir dispute had international dimensions and India was the main impediment to its permanent resolution.
Mobile Services and internet Services were also suspended in Kashmir by Indian authorities as an attempt to stop voice of Kashmiris but facebook users and other social networking site users from Kashmir changed their profile pics to black day.
Tight security was kept to prevent people from holding protests, meanwhile one youth was crushed to death by an Indian Army vehicle is Sarnal Islamabad. As the news spread protests erupted in the area.
