Microsoft company offers online upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for $39.99

Microsoft has announced via a blog-post that customers running Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7 will qualify to download Windows 8 Pro for just $39.99. The special upgrade price will be available to customers in 131 countries across the globe.

Back in April, Microsoft had revealed that Windows 8 will be available in four editions - Windows 8, Windows 8 Pro, Windows Enterprise and Windows RT (for ARM processors). While Windows 8 is the default recommendation for most consumers, those looking for a broader set of features like updated Windows Explorer, Task Manager, and better multi-monitor support, should opt for Windows 8 Pro.

The Redmond-based software giant also shared details about Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant, the special program it has designed to help existing Windows customers have a smooth upgrade experience to Windows 8.
The Upgrade Assistant will check to make sure your PC is ready for Windows 8, providing a detailed compatibility report and actions you can take to fix any potential incompatibilities. The Upgrade Assistant also helps download Windows 8, letting you pause and resume the download. You can also burn the download onto a DVD or create your own bootable USB drive. Alternatively, you can purchase a backup DVD from Microsoft for $15 plus shipping and handling.

Upgrade Assistant goes beyond mere downloading, letting users choose whether they want to carry their data and settings from the old Windows version or starting their Windows 8 life afresh. The Upgrade Assistant aims to make the process as painless as possible.

Microsoft is clearly hoping offering online upgrades at attractive prices will encourage people to upgrade to Windows 8 early, given the success Apple has had with similar efforts.
